Controversial Interstate 99 Project

JOHNSTOWN —

The I-99 project could cost the state 100 million dollars by the time it's all said and done with. Some local officials and residents feel that money could be better spent elsewhere.

Cambria County Commissioner P.J. Stevens says the I-99 project could cost 200 percent more than it was budgeted for. He's frustrated that more than eight million dollars for Cambria County roads was taken away from him for other state projects, possibly I-99.

Vicki Bretz is also frustrated. She feels the extra money spent on I-99 could have gone to a Rt. 56 West bypass in Johnstown. Vicki's son Zack was killed on this narrow windy road back in 1997 when he was hit by a truck. She along with Johnstowns Mayor have been trying to get the bypass to keep highway type traffic out of Johnstowns West End neighborhood. She says the big trucks and abundant traffic is dangerous for both residents and travelers. But to her disappointment, she says PennDot says they don't have the money for such a project at this time.

My son was taken from me. My father was in an accident on that street last year, almost died... I almost lost my father last year on the same street that my son died on. Yes, Im angry and frustrated, says Vicki fighting back tears.

The Rt. 56 west bypass project isn't dead yet. PennDot says they will look for funding if a better plan for the route is designed.

Incidentally, Tuesday would have been sacks 14th birthday.
