Johnstown Tax Preparer Sentenced For Tax Fraud

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

A Cambria County tax preparer was sentenced to five years probation and must pay $15,000 in fines for cheating the federal government out of nearly $87,000.

Sam Grasso pleaded guilty in April to helping people file 82 income tax returns with inflated and false medical expenses, charitable contributions and business expences.

While Grasso didn't diretly profit from those actions, which took place over four years, his business and reputation did.

In federal court on Tuesday, Grasso expressed his remorse. He and his wife both told the judge in Johnstown about his community service, mission trips and how he must work to continue to support his family.

The 23 clients he helped cheat had to pay the consequences by correcting their tax filings.
