Johnstown woman awakens to man standing over her bed

By Maria Miller

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

A suburban Johnstown woman woke up Monday morning to find a man standing over her bed. It happened along Durant Street in Lower Yoder Township.

Police were actively searching the area throughout the day, but there were no signs of the suspect.

The victim didn't want to be identified. She told 6 News at first she thought it might have all been just a dream, but she said she called the cops when she went downstairs and found some of her things were out of place.

"I was sound asleep and when I woke up there was a young man standing three to four feet in front of my bed just looking at me," she said.

She said she doesn't think the man knew she was there sleeping, because he seemed surprised to see her.

"I sat up and (gasped,)" said the victim. "He said, 'Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry.' He ran out and I heard heavy feet running down the stairs."

At first she said she wasn't sure if it was a dream, but she said she found evidence downstairs to prove it was real.

"A stand had been knocked down at the bottom of the stairs. It was scary," she said. "I checked to see if everything is okay and nothing was missing."

But that wasn't the case for her neighbor, who just last week said his home was also broken into.

"Somebody apparently got in through my kitchen door and went upstairs," said the man who also did not want to be identified. "I got a steel box that they broke into and a gun cabinet they broke into."

He said the thieves got away with his guns, a good amount of money and jewelry that belonged to his wife.

"It's a dead end street," he said. "There's very seldom any people here that don't belong here."

While he said everyone's been a little shook up, he said he has no reason to worry.

"You can't sit around worrying about yesterday," he said. "Life goes on."

Police haven't released many details because they're still actively looking for the suspect. But they're reminding people to keep their doors locked and to look out for their neighbors. Any suspicious activity should be reported to police.
