Latest Crash Cause for Concern on Route 322

By Stef Davis

STATE COLLEGE, Pa

Crash, after crash, after crash. The Route 322 curve near State College is notorious for smash-ups.

Skip Dreibelbis, State College, says, "Over the years I’d hear the crashes at 2:30 in the morning, and you have to wonder how bad it is."

One of those crashes happened just Monday. A tractor trailer smashing into a bridge column along the curve--sending the driver to the hospital and halting traffic for hours. It’s the newest statistic is a serious of smash-ups along this stretch of street.

Skip Dreibelbis lives and works nearby. He's been pushing for reform on this road for years.

Dreibelbis adds, "It’s a matter of public safety. The road should be changed and rebuilt to fix this problem."

PennDOT added blinking lights to warn drivers of the curve a few years ago, but they themselves admit there have still been wrecks here even after the new safety additions.

Dreibelbis notes, "I don’t know if it’s going to take a busload of Penn State athletes, high school students, or how big of a tragedy it has to entail for PennDOT to actually do something about this road."

A PennDOT spokesperson says that they are aware of the issue, but at this point have no plans to make any changes to the highway.
