Attorneys who have already filed or are considering filing civil lawsuits related to alleged sex abuse by a Franciscan brother told 6 News they plan to proceed with those cases, despite the friar's suicide this weekend.

Police in Blair Township say Brother Stephen Baker was found dead of a self-inflicted knife wound at the St. Bernardine Monastery in Hollidaysburg on Saturday.

Baker had been named in legal settlements involving abuse allegations in Ohio decades ago and allegations have also surfaced of abuse at Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown in the 1990s.

According to The Associated Press, attorney Michael Parrish Jr., of Johnstown, said he represents 20 former students who allege that Baker assaulted or molested them when he was Bishop McCort's athletic trainer. He said many expressed shock when told of the suicide.

6 News learned over the weekend that a Greensburg attorney has already filed notice in a Cambria County court that she will soon be filing civil lawsuits on behalf of three alleged victims from Bishop McCort. Altoona attorney Richard Serbin has also been contacted by 12 others who say they were victims.

Monday, 6 News was speaking with attorneys for former Bishop McCort students who claim they were victims of Baker and what's next for those cases. Stay with 6 News, WJACTV.com and WJACTV.com Mobile for continuing coverage.
