Legislative farm tour held at alpaca farm

By Brittany Boyer

WEST DECATUR, Pa. —

Thursday afternoon local farmers got the chance to discuss concerns with lawmakers.

The Clearfield County chapter of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau held its annual farm tour in West Decatur.

This year's tour was held at the Dreamcatcher and Fiber Mill owned by Tammy Bush.

Farmers from the area attended so they could voice their concerns with state representatives, county commissioners and even people running for office in November.

The Clearfield County farm bureau president said that the meeting is a good chance for farmers to engage in discussion.

Some of the major topics discussed were property taxes, since farmers are "farm rich." Another major discussion included problems farmers run into when driving farming equipment on the roadways.

State representative, Matt Gabler of the 75th District, said he enjoys coming out to events like the farm tour to see things hand on.

At the Dreamcatcher and Fiber Mill Tammy and her husband raise 11 alpacas.

Alpacas originated in South America.

Bush said that once a year they shear the alpacas to collect their fiber.

Once they collect the fiber, it is cleaned and they eventually spin it.

Bush said she enjoys dyeing the fiber with Kool-Aid to make it vibrant colors.

Right now, Bush said that she is trying to retire to her farm where she can raise the alpacas full-time and make sweaters and scarves with their fiber.
