Liquid Illegally Dumped In Clearfield County

Clearfield County —

First, a local man's property is torn up because the oil and gas rights owner decided to drill. Now, the drilling company is accused of illegally dumping a liquid on that land. Property owner, George Lucas, says he is outraged.

Ardent Resources is the company permitted to drill on Lucas’ property and others. But, they have contracted Northeast Energy to do the drilling. On one of Ardent's leases, the drilling company hit an unusually large amount of ground water. One of the companies decided to truck out the excess water to a different site.

The water ended up being dumped on Lucas’ property, which is illegal. The Department of Environmental Protection says ground water has to be taken care of on the original site. It is not to be taken from the lease.

For these actions, the DEP says Northeast Energy will be given a written notice of violation.

Wednesday morning, the DEP sent out a water specialist to take samples of what was dumped in the pit. Lucas says he feels it's not just ground water, but something illegal.

The labs in Harrisburg should have the results within the next two weeks. If anything contaminated made its way into Lucas’ pit, Northeast Energy could be given more violations and penalized even further.

Channel 6 spoke with Northeast Energy Wednesday and they said to talk with Ardent Resources. We left messages with them and they haven't returned calls.

George Lucas says this situation is something that happens more than we think and he urges property owners to make sure they know all that's going on with their properties.
