Lobbyists Want Local Congressman

Cambria County —

Two lobbyists from PennEnvironment answered questions outside of Congressman John Murtha's office. Their intent was to speak with the congressman about rising fuel costs and to get him on board with a bill they are supporting. The Congressman wasn't there, so they just left information.

Unfortunately, their bill probably won't make you jump for joy. It has nothing to do with lowering high gas prices. It has everything to do with gas conservation. They want Congressman Murtha to support this bill which will increase the average minimum gas mileage for vehicles to 33 miles per gallon by 2016. They say the demand for gas has gone up and supplies are down, so they don't think gas prices will ever go down to what they were a year or so ago.

"There is not a way to lower so much as there is a way to conserve so that were not using as much and paying more than we have to at the pump," says Stephen Rogness of PennEnvironment.

Congressman Murtha released a statement today about the high prices. He says he sees a need for mileage standards to be increased. His statement seems to be in line with what PennEnvironment is promoting. However, they are not sure if he indeed will get on board with them.
