Local Boaters Throw Down Their Anchors

HUNTINGDON, Pa. —

The price at the pump was $4.33 a gallon for some folks this weekend, who were even staying local. And that price had local boaters staying off the water.

Memorial Day weekend is normally the kick-off to the summer boating season for local boaters. But on this Memorial Day, the parking lots at Raystown Lake were full and the lake wasn't. A lot of boaters were picnicking or lounging instead. Some of the boaters said with that price at the pump, instead of feeling the breeze it's better to throw down their anchors.

Folks at the Seven Points Marina said the boat ramps weren't full either. A lot of boaters didn't even bother to put their boats into the water.

And boat dealers are taking a hit. One local boat dealer said he figured business would be slow, but not this slow. He's had customers put down payments on their boats and then pull out when oil hit $130 a barrel.

Even avid boaters said they are picking a couple weekends this summer to go for a spin on the lake, instead of every weekend, because they just can't ride out the fuel costs.

Boat dealers like Jim's Anchorage are offering a lot of deals to help move boats off the lots.

Folks at the marina said the real test will be how that lake looks on the 4th of July.
