Local County Fair Hopes For No Rain

Bedford County —

So far so good when it comes to weather for the Bedford County Fair. Two years ago, the fair faced seven days of rain. Last year, rain cancelled two shows; totally closing all of the activities one day.

So this year's 90 degree temperatures don't seem too bad.

The local 4-H'ers will tell you rain is needed for the crops, but not for the week of the fair. Last year, one of the cancelled shows cost the fair 20 thousand dollars. Fair organizers just sit and pray it doesn't rain too much during the fair, although most of the events will still do well in spite of the rain. Other than a covered stage for the concert, nothing special is done. They say they sweat more over the weather than in the hot and humid heat.

"We're watching it everyday. In fact, in the office there, I have it on from 6 am until 11 o'clock at night, says Fair Vice President Jim Edwards.

The high temperatures cause a potential problem, so fans, water, and shade keep the animals cool. Since the animals are pretty much used to this heat, an added watch is kept on the kids to make sure they don't over heat.

The highly attended bull ride event was one of the shows cancelled last year due to rain. Fortunately this year, as of now, the weather looks pretty good for that event.
