Local Fire Departments Cheated?

Cambria County —

One of Johnstown's biggest moneymakers, the Thunder in the Valley motorcycle rally, is run by the Cambria County Convention and Visitors Bureau. According to State Police, three Johnstown volunteer fire departments were cheated of out of thousands of dollars by that bureau. Now, three bureau employees, Lisa Daily, Mary Jayne Korenoski and Karen Sollday are facing charges.

The investigation began after undercover agents asked Bureau officials if they could obtain a special occasions permit and were turned down. Legally, the Bureau could use the fire department's permits, but they could not profit from beer sold with them. The State Police Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement says the Visitors Bureau kept thousands of dollars from beer profits which should have gone back to the Geistown, Lorain and Oakland fire departments.

Investigators say they approached Executive Director, Lisa Daily, to give the Bureau a chance to fix the problem before criminal charges were filed. According to police, Daily told them the volunteer departments were given a total of $15,000 combined. However, there remains $54,000 in profits. Police say the Bureau claimed they were owed that money for expenditures, however, police also say additional costs were not passed on to any other vendors at Thunder in the Valley.

State police say they are not sure if this situation occurred only this year, or every year since Thunder in the Valley began. Daily said she is surprised by the outcome of the investigation.
