Local food pantries in need of donations as holiday season approaches

By Brittany Boyer

CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. —

It's the season of giving, and food pantries throughout our viewing area are hoping that you will lend a helping hand this holiday season.

In Clearfield County, 6 News spoke with two food pantries who are in need of donations.

The food pantry at the Salvation Army in Clearfield has been nearly empty for the last two months.

Captain Sharon Harford said that they have had to turn away several people.

Thanks to the recent Boys Scouts Thanksgiving food drive, the Clearfield Ministerium food pantry was able to stock up recently.

Without the help of the boy scouts director Robin Clark said the shelves would be bare.

"The elderly are reaching out and it's hard for a lot of people to swallow their pride and say, 'hey I need a little help,''' Clark said.

For the last two years Clearfield County is one of only five counties in the state that did not received federal emergency funding.

Clark said it has put a burden on the 10 food pantries in the county.

Money is so tight, the food pantries Clark works at in Clearfield and Curwensville cannot purchase meat.

"Right now I'm on hotdogs and hamburgers. We don't want to go beyond our budget because we're trying to squeak by," she said.

As the holidays quickly approach, Clark said more families are in need of help.

Clark is hopeful that people will donate so they don't have to turn anyone away.

The Clearfield Ministerium food pantry is the largest food pantry in the county.

Clark said they are specifically looking for meat donations. However, she said they will take anything they can get.

Clark encourages you to donate to your local food pantry this holiday season.
