Local furniture store donates beds to hundreds of needy children

By Lindsay Ward and  WJAC Web Staff

A local furniture store is helping children in the area rest easy.

Since 2010, Ashley Furniture Homestore has run the A Hope To Dream program. This year alone, the store will deliver more than 200 beds to local children in need.

Workers at the store traveled through Cambria and Blair counties on Wednesday, delivering beds to kids. One family said they couldn't believe they were chosen by the store to receive two beds for their children.

For every mattress Ashley Furniture sells in Johnstown or Altoona, the store puts aside $5 and puts that toward the program. Once the store gathers enough money, workers go through an application process and determine who needs a mattress the most. After they make their selections, workers pack up their trucks and start deliveries.

In addition to the beds, the children receive $600 worth of quality bed sets.

"At this point in time, we're delivering memory foam mattresses and frames and comforter sets to the kids from the applications that have touched our hearts, and we definitely wanted to make a difference," said Mike Pesta, regional manager for Ashley Furniture Homestore

Melissa Beacom's child was one of the recipients.

"My daughter is thrilled. (She said), 'Where am I going to put it? Then I have to rearrange my room,'" Beacon said.

Wednesday, the store was delivering 10 beds in the area.
