Local GOP Members Optimistic About Midterm Elections

With Election Day just weeks away, Republicans and Democrats are pulling out all of the stops to make sure voters know just how important the midterm elections are.

Typically, in a non-presidential election year, voters tend to be less interested. But the chairwoman of Cambria County's Republican Party said that's not the case this year.

"This is about as interesting as it gets. We have a Senate seat up, which is critically important. We have a congressional seat up -- the 12th District in Cambria County -- and the governor's race, (which) makes it exciting in all of Pennsylvania," said Ann Wilson.

Statewide, the GOP has set up 22 victory centers, including one in Johnstown. There, volunteers such as James Roven have been working the phones to get out the vote.

"In many cases, some Democrats who have answered the phone have told me they're switching their votes to Republican, but I haven't had any Republicans tell me they're switching their votes to Democrat," Roven said.

Republicans said that's because people in the Alleghenies seem to be frustrated and disappointed with the Obama administration. While Republicans are trying to register new voters, they're also banking on a lot of independent voters to swing their way and look for a big turnaround.

Wilson said, "The only poll that matters is happening in November, and I think we're all going to be pleased with the results."

The last day to register to vote in the midterm election is Monday, Oct. 4, and voter registration applications must be postmarked by then.
