Lawmakers Debate Tax Rebate Checks

WASHINGTON, D.C. —

Don't check the mailbox yet for your tax rebate check.

Congress is still divided over how much to hand out - and to whom.

Last week, the U.S. House and the president agreed on a plan to give $600 rebate checks to workers who earn less than $75,000 a year.

But, today, the Senate is weighing in on the matter. Top Senate Democrats want to hand out slightly smaller checks -- $500, in most cases --- but to more people, including higher-income families and retirees.

Senator Bob Casey (D - Scranton) is also asking Congress to cough up additional money for more food stamps and unemployment benefits, when sending out the rebates.

Nearly all sides agree on one issue, though: they want consumers to spend the money once they receive it.

A Senate vote and a final decision on rebate checks are expected Monday.
