CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —
New technology is helping a local library change its system, but it won't be just library officials who will have to adjust.
The Cambria County Library is one of 40 libraries in the state being transferred to the new system called Evergreen.
"It's an open-source system and we're joining a consortium of libraries, and loan rules and other policies will have to be agreed upon as a group," said Lyn Meek, executive director of the library.
Under the new system, the library has changed its lending time for books from four weeks to two weeks because of the new system. Library officials said the change will help save the library money, but also make it more convenient for those utilizing the library's resources.
With regard to the shorter lending period, Meek said the library chose to go this route to help out the 13 other libraries in the county and save money.
"As more and more libraries get on board with this, we'll be able to spread the costs across the state and that's our hope in joining this group," Meek said.
She said the server for the Evergreen system is located in Philadelphia.
While they're still adjusting to the new system, neighboring libraries are taking notice and getting on board as well.
"Somerset County Libraries -- they just went live last week, so their growing pains are newer than ours. Eventually, books from other libraries will be shared with the libraries that are on this system and it may go statewide in a number of years," Meek said.
Another nearby county that is considering joining the new system is Blair County. On Tuesday, workers from the libraries will be traveling to the Cambria County Library to see if they'll join.
