Local Nurses Upset Over Job

Cambria County —

Nurses at a Cambria County nursing home are frustrated. They are upset that they constantly have to work overtime. Overtime means more money, but the workers say it isn't worth it.

The workers of Laurel Crest are saying they come in for their eight hour shift and never know when they will be allowed to leave, often working 12 to 16 hours a day. They say that if they leave, they will lose their jobs. They add that the job is eating away at their family life.

Cambria County Commissioners say they understand the worker's plight and say a mistake in management caused the problems. The commissioners say they have corrected the problem but the nurses disagree.

"Morale is so low, everybody is stressed. The biggest concern is the quality of care the residents are getting plus the safety for the residents and the workers," says Nurse Lee McIntosh.

"We agree with their position and we don't believe people should be overworked. We appreciate our employees and try to treat them fairly and to that end, we have had discussions with them off the record... to know their concerns and to understand," says Commissioner P.J. Stevens. Today's picket was only an informational picket. The commissioners say they hope today's picket wasn't a ploy as the nurses' union is currently bargaining over a new contract.
