Local Olympic Wrestler Questions Decision to Remove Sport from Olympics

By Stef Davis

BOALSBURG, Pa

"Who would like to wrestle in the Olympics someday?"

A question that for many young athletes may soon have no answer. The International Olympic Committee looking to possibly bump wrestling off the roster. A decision local Olympian Ken Chertow says is a devastating one, especially for up and coming athletes.

Ken Chertow says, “It’s good to have a dream. It’s good to have role models. It’s good to have it on television to see the thrill of it. It’s a positive thing."

So Chertow is making it his mission to keep wrestling on the world-wide stage. And with the sport so deeply-ingrained in our area, he says there is no better place to kick start the movement than right here at home.

Chertow adds, “It’s important we fight. I believe Central PA has to lead the battle nationwide and worldwide."

And while wrestling is on the chopping block, Chertow says it won't go down without a fight. And he hopes it'll come out on top.

Chertow notes, “We as a wrestling community have to be engaged and tell the IOC why they should keep wrestling. We have to get it straightened out. So keeping wrestling, yeah, that's the goal and that's the plan."
