By Maria Miller
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —
A Republican state House candidate is speaking out about threats made against her and her family.Sherry Stalley said she's being bullied into exiting the race for the 71st District House seat. But she said, she's not about to let that happen.
Stalley invited 6 News reporter Maria Miller to her home to send a message to the people behind the threats.
Stalley said she knew getting into politics would make her a target for personal attacks and she said she was ready for that But the threats she received over the weekend attack her family, something she said is not okay.
"They're all just personal attacks on me and on my family," said Stalley. "I never, ever, ever imagined this."
Police said someone trespassed onto Stalley's property sometime over night Sunday into Monday, letting her horses out of the barn and leaving behind a threatening letter that targeted Stalley and her family. The letter warned her to drop out of the November election, or else.
"I can't fathom who it would be, who would stoop that low," said Stalley. "Go ahead tell lies about me, say mean things about me, but leave my kids out of it. Leave my family out of it."
But that's not all, Stalley said on Monday night someone set fire to campaign signs in her driveway. It was an attack she considers extremely personal after her family fell victim to a devastating fire just a couple of years ago.
"There is nothing you could do that doesn't cut to the core than to set a fire outside of my house," said Stalley. "We lost everything in that fire."
It's no secret that Stalley is married to a well known cop, Johnstown police Captain Andrew Frear. Still, Stalley said she has no idea who could be responsible for the threats.
"As brazen as they are and as big of cowards as they are, I don't think they care," said Stalley. "They just want to make a point."
But until her family asks her to, Stalley said she's not backing out of the election.
"That's all I care about, that's why I'm doing this. Honestly, that's why I decided to run in the first place," said Stalley. "The first time they tell me, 'No more, mom,' there will be no more."
The threatening letter left at Stalley's home was signed "Democrats for Barbin." Bryan Barbin, who is running against Stalley, stopped by the 6 News studio on Tuesday and denied any involvement in the threats. He said he does no condone attacks of any kind against family. But, Stalley said, he has not reached out to her.
