Local Red Cross Volunteer Describes Hurricane Relief Effort

A local Red Cross volunteer who helped with relief efforts on the Gulf Coast said she worked more than 12 hours a day for nearly three weeks to help communities recover from Hurricane Gustav.

Linda Myers said she met with nearly 30 families a day to help with their immediate needs, but she said she found herself getting attached to many of those people and simply wanted to give them more.

"It really breaks your heart," Myers said. "Sometimes you break down and you cry with the client because it's just really sad."

Even though she said the hours were long and the conditions rough, she said she would do it again in a heartbeat.

"I realized this is something I love to do," Myers said.

The trip to Hattiesburg, Miss., was her 12th volunteer trip with the Red Cross.

On average, the Red Cross usually sends over 12,000 volunteers to national disaster areas each year. In the last 12 weeks, it has sent 15,000.
