Local Rescue Crews Head East

Johnstown —

Members of the Johnstown Fire Department packed their bags and loaded the cars Wednesday as they prepared for the trip to Harrisburg. The group is helping with swift water rescues for those victimized by this week's massive flooding.

"We're going to go to Harrisburg. From that point they'll give us a mission and assign us to a community and go from there," says Fire Chief Anthony Kovacic.

Five fire fighters with special training in water rescue are going, along with 9-10 others from East Taylor and Jackson Volunteer Fire Departments. The group is also meeting on the turnpike with more crews from Greensburg. Officials we spoke with say, they weren't surprised Wednesday morning when the state contacted them to go.

"In Johnstown, we are well aware of the situation with water and how dangerous is can be," says Assistant Fire Chief Chris Selfridge.

The group is taking three boats and plenty of rescue items. They say they aren't exactly sure what to expect when they arrive, but one thing is for sure, this is no vacation.

"Water is probably the most dangerous situation a fire fighter can get into," says Selfridge. "We just need to be on the defense and help out any way we can."

The water rescue crews are expected to be gone for about a week, possibly longer if needed. Officials assure us, there are still plenty of fire fighters and resources to cover our region.
