Local School Security Systems In Place

Cambria County —

Channel 6 spoke with schools in three counties about their security measures in light of the Colorado shooting. But even with the measures in place, the horrific incident points out that no school is immune. A buzzer system is now the only way you can get into most schools across the Alleghenies.

"I believe the days of having just an opened door policy have ended," says Forest Hills Assistant Superintendent, Ray Danel.

And that's not the only security system in place. Every school we spoke with has check-in systems for visitors and security badges, and some have even installed cameras around the buildings. At Penn Lincoln Elementary in Altoona, they have security greeters in place, some of whom are actually armed.

"It was kind of surprising to us that this perpetrator seemed to be able to just walk right into the school, which would be very difficult here," says Tom Bradley with the Altoona Area School District.

While nothing close to the Colorado incident has happened in our area, the buzzer system has been put to good use.

"There have been times where we've called the police department to tell them to be on call and to have someone close," says Joe DiBartola, the Conemaugh Township Superintendent.

But even with the stepped up measures, school officials warn that anything is still possible.

"We have to be right every day and an intruder only has to be right one time to prove us wrong, that we haven't done enough," says Danel.

Some schools also have intruder buttons located in their offices that, if pressed, will automatically notify 911.
