Local Soldier Laid To Rest

A Blair County soldier killed in Iraq was laid to rest Thursday.

Hundreds of people made their way into the Good Funeral Home on Plank Road in Altoona throughout the morning for the funeral of Army Pfc. Larry Parks Jr.

Some people who didn't know Parks helped honor him by lining the driveway of the funeral home with American flags.

Local police and fire departments remembered Parks for the public servant he was -- as a soldier in the Army, a volunteer firefighter for the Newburg Fire Department for eight years, and possibly a future police officer.

"This is a very tough thing. He was a good firefighter, a good friend," Robert Dennis, president of the Newburg. "We all communicated with him when he went into the service, and he had plans on being a Logan Township (police officer) when he got back from the service. He made all his interests known to his mother and dad, and all of us, too, because he loves being a public servant. That's why he went to Iraq -- he thought he could make a difference."
