Local Student Dies On Way Home From Concert In Pittsburgh

One Somerset County student is dead and another is in a hospital after an accident early Saturday morning in Westmoreland County. Police said the accident happened around 1:30 a.m. on Route 30 in Ligioner Township.

Two cars full of students and parents from Somerset County were heading back home from the Britney Spears concert in Pittsburgh.

"I knew a bunch of students were going. Everyone was so excited, but I didn't think anything like this would happen," said Brittany Trout, a sophomore at North Star.

John Blough, a freshman at North Star High School, was sitting in the back seat of a car when a picup truck rear-ended them at a stop light. Blough died and a female student in the car in front of Blough was taken to a hospital.

The 24-year-old driver of the pickup truck is also in a hospital. The Westmoreland County District Attorney's Office is handling the case.

North Star High School Principal Joseph Bradley said grief counselors will be at the school first thing Monday morning for students who need to talk.

Last April, Tyler Shaffer, also a student at North Star, died suddenly after suffering an aneurysm following his performance in the school's musical.
