Local Tsunami Efforts One Year Later

Centre County —

It's been a year since the devastating tsunami hit South Asia and several efforts are still underway in Centre County to continue to support the victims.

Several organizations in Centre County wanted to establish long-term partnerships to try and help the victims of the tsunami rebuild.

One such group is The Town and Gown International Partnership, which was started soon after the tragedy by retired Penn State Professor U.B. Bakker. He's spearheaded efforts to raise money for victims, created business and school partnerships, as well as developed a project that helps provide boats for Sri Lankan fishermen. Even though it's only been a year, professor Bakker believes the efforts are making a difference. A group of students at Penn State are also continuing their efforts to help a Sri Lankan orphanage.
