Longest-serving Pa. House member unseated

By The Associated Press

U.S. Rep. Tim Holden has lost his re-election bid in the Democratic primary, meaning the tenure of Pennsylvania's longest-serving House member will end this year.

Holden, first elected to Congress in 1992, lost to attorney Matt Cartwright Tuesday in a race affected by new congressional district boundaries.

Cartwright tried to portray Holden as too conservative for the new district that now includes Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and Easton -- areas unfamiliar to the veteran Holden.

Incumbents otherwise went unchallenged or won handily in the primaries.
