RIDGWAY, Pa. —
In the 1970's Gary Gerber became a physical education teacher within Ridgway School District.
In 1974, Gerber said he became the first junior high wrestling coach.
A few years later he became assistant coach at the high school level.
By 1983, Gerber was offered the head wrestling coaching position at Ridgway High school.
After being a wrestling coach for nearly four decades Gerber said there are many things he will miss when not on the mat.
"We're a very close-knit group. It is neat being part of it and being with the kids. It keeps you young," he said.
Gerber told 6 News one of his proudest memories is when the team won the school's 600th match last season. As the end of Gerber's coaching career ends he hopes that kids will remember one thing he has always stressed.
"I just want them to continue what we have always done. Work hard, strive to succeed, push each other and stay connected as a community. We have a great community here in Ridgway," he said.
Gerber will coach his final home match Tuesday night at Ridgway High school. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
