Man Accused Of Abusing Baby Has Criminal History

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

There are new details about a Johnstown man accused of abusing his 8-week-old son.

According to the criminal complaint, the child has bleeding on the brain, multiple head fractures, broken ribs and several bruises.

Johnstown police said it all happened at the hands of 22-year-old John Nerone. He is the baby's father and also a volunteer firefighter in Middle Taylor Township.

According to the criminal complaint, Nerone claims that the baby was sleeping in his car seat Monday and woke up fussy. Nerone said when he picked up his son, the baby threw his head back hard and began having trouble breathing. However, the doctors treating the child said the baby's injuries don't support that story.

Police said the incident happened at Nerone's home in Middle Taylor Township. The baby was then taken to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. There's no word on his condition.

WJAC has learned from Indiana County court that John Nerone plead guilty and spent time in jail in 2007 for theft charges and arson charges, while he was a firefighter for Armagh Volunteer Fire Company. Two horses died in one of the fires Nerone set.

WJAC also learned that last April, Nerone had a 2-month-old daughter who died from a brain injury. That case was ruled accidental at the time.
