Man Accused Of Killing Toddler Appears In Court

A Blair County man accused in the death of his girlfriend's son was in court for a preliminary hearing Tuesday.

Douglas Gardini, 28, of Altoona, is charged with criminal homicide and endangering the welfare of children in connection with the Jan. 19 death of 15-month-old Shane Sullivan.

Three months before the toddler died, Children and Youth Services took the child from his mother's custody, citing neglect and cleanliness issues.

Police said the toddler and another child were returned to their mother's care in December, one month before the toddler's death.

Doctors who examined the baby after his death testified that the toddler suffered multiple injuries, including severe head and abdominal injuries, rib fractures, contusions and abrasions. Physicians said the toddler died as a result of being beaten.

According to an Altoona police detective, Gardini said he was feeding the baby in a secured high chair but left him alone for two to three minutes to use the bathroom. Gardini said when he came back to the kitchen, the toddler was lying facedown and appeared to be having a seizure. Gardini said the toddler's mother gave the child CPR and they called 911.

Officials with the Blair County Coroner's Department were expected to testify Tuesday afternoon.
