Man arrested after confessing to brazen armed robbery

By Bill Wadell

SNOW SHOE, Pa. —

Troopers told 6News that one man was taken into custody on Thursday afternoon when he turned himself in and admitted to a bold daylight robbery in northern Centre County.

According to state police at the Rockview barracks, a man wearing jeans, a tan jacket and a ski mask walked into the Dollar General in Snow Shoe around 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday and demanded cash from clerk.

“It was pretty strange. The weather was cold last night, he had a ski mask on. I think people really didn’t take much notice,” said Tpr. Leigh Barrows. “There was another cashier there and he followed her toward the back with a customer. Then, he had turned around and approached the other employee that was in the front and doing some work. That’s who he demanded the money from.”

Barrows said robbery took place while an unsuspecting customer was trying to purchase several items at the cash register and that the crime was captured from several angles on surveillance cameras.

Before the man turned himself in, shoppers at a neighboring store told 6News that the brazen robbery left residents and business owners on edge.

“I’m really surprised, because it is such a rural area,” said Cathy Shaffer. “There are a lot of camping cabins in the area. They get hit from time to time. I guess it can happen, but a business (during open) hours? It’s very surprising.”

State police told 6News that the man will be booked at the Centre County Correction Facility and that his name will be released after a criminal complaint is filed.

Store employees and customers were not hurt during the armed robbery, police said.
