Man Arrested In Happy Valley Counterfeit Cash Investigation

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. —

State College police say they have arrested an 18-year-old and are looking for two other men after counterfeit cash was used at the Nittany Mall.

Police said Jose Mendoza used several counterfeit $100 bills at stores inside the Nittany Mall Thursday evening.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance camera video, looking for two other Hispanic men who also may have reportedly used counterfeit cash at the mall.

Fifteen counterfeit bills were discovered in cash registers throughout the mall.

One officer told WJAC-TV Friday that the counterfeit bills were hard to detect, and urge local business owners to carefully look over larger bills.

According to State College police Lt. Chris Fishel, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are investigating whether Mendoza, an Ecuador native, has proper documentation to be in the United States.

Mendoza is behind bars at the Centre County Correctional Facility; bail is set at $75,000.
