CLEARFIELD, Pa. —
It took a jury less than an hour June 27 to find Jerry Lee Ritchey, of Strattanville guilty of several commercial burglaries in Clearfield County.
Prior to his conviction, Ritchey had spent nearly a year at the Clearfield County jail after he was arrested in connection with the burglaries last July.
A jury found Ritchey guilty of breaking into businesses along Route 322 in Clearfield County.
Ritchey was taken to the Clearfield County jail until his trial.
Police said Ritchey's criminal behavior continued while he was in jail.
According to an affidavit, one of the inmates housed with Ritchey told police in December 2011 that Ritchey wanted his ex-wife killed along with her boyfriend.
Ritchey told the man that his ex-wife would not let him talk to his children.
The inmate told police that Ritchey said that he would like to have his current wife's face burned with acid or just cut up with a knife so that she wouldn't be pretty anymore.
Court documents said that Ritchey asked the inmate if he would do this for him stating that when they were both out of jail that Ritchey knew of some high-dollar burglaries and he would include the inmate as a payment for doing this.
The inmate allegedly agreed.
According to an affidavit, Ritchey gave the inmate a piece of paper with his ex-wife's name, address and detailed description. The paper also contained Ritchey's mother's contact information so that the inmate could contact her and advise her that he was in prison with Ritchey and for her to tell Ritchey that everything is OK.
Court documents said that this would be a sign to Ritchey that the job was done.
The inmate told police that every time he spoke to Ritchey, Ritchey asked if he was going to do it for him.
According to an affidavit, on Jan. 27, police placed a body recorder on the inmate and sent him to talk to Ritchey.
During this conversation Ritchey told him that he wanted his current wife killed as well.
The information said that he would kill her.
Police said Ritchey again provided the inmate with a piece of paper with his current wife's address, along with a sketched layout of inside of her house.
Officials said the paper also had Ritchey's ex-wife and boyfriend's address.
Authorities said Ritchey told the inmate that he should probably wait outside in the dark when his wife gets home from work and do it before she goes into the house.
Police said the inmate contacted them because he felt that Ritchey was obsessed with having three people killed.
This week Ritchey was sentenced to four to 16 years in prison for the four commercial burglaries.
Later in the week, Ritchey decided to plead guilty for the solicitation of his inmate days before Ritchey was scheduled for trial.
Before Ritchey was sentenced, his ex-wife, Jennifer begged the judge to consider several things.
She told the judge that this was not the first time Ritchey had tried to harm and kill others, adding that he threatened to kill their daughters in 2007.
She requested the judge give Ritchey a maximum sentence, send him out of state and have his parental rights removed.
"My daughters have seen him beat me, break me and threaten to kill me and them," she said.
Jennifer's boyfriend also requested Ritchey receive the maximum sentence.
When given the chance to speak, Ritchey also addressed the judge, saying that his ex-wife has filed two false reports on him.
"I love my kids," he said.
Ritchey said that he already feels like he has changed and would like to help other people.
Ritchey's mother also told the judge it has been a difficult year for her and her family.
She said she is saddened that she is 60 years and and cannot even see her grandchildren.
Following these remarks the judge sentenced Ritchey to four to nine years. He plead guilty on two counts of criminal solicitation of aggravated assault and one count of terroristic threats.
The judge aggregated Ritchey's sentences, which means between the burglaries and the solicitation, he will spend the next eight to 25 years in state prison.
