Many seniors upset over change in Cambria Co. transportation service

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

Many local senior citizens said they are unhappy with the news that Cambria County's Agency On Aging plans to eliminate van service for older adults and let CamTran take over the transportation.

The decision to switch to CamTran – which is Cambria County's public transportation authority -- was designed to save taxpayers money, but Kristen Dayton, director of the Forest Hills Senior Center in South Fork, said since the announcement, seniors have expressed their disappointment.

Dayton said many seniors have told her they're concerned that CamTran won't do what the agency's transportation has done, like wait for them or help them at their door.

Ginny Hull, a senior who uses the transportation service, said, "Our bus drivers help us they help us with our groceries and it's real nice and we'd like to have it like it used to be."

Dayton also said she's concerned that if CamTran is unable to help seniors get on buses, then there won't be as many seniors at the center as there should be.

In addition to the service, she said seniors will also miss the camaraderie they have with their bus drivers.

"They love their bus driver. He's been with them for a while. They're very upset he's losing his job," Dayton said. "They became familiar with him - he's like a friend to them."

For the Agency On Aging, it's been a gradual process in eliminating its van service until CamTran officially takes over. The complete transition won't be until June 30.
