Mark Critz Sworn In As 12th District's New Congressman

WASHINGTON —

For the first time in nearly 40 years, Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District has a new congressman.

Mark Critz took the oath of office at the U.S. Capitol Thursday and officially took over the job of his former boss -- the late U.S. Rep. Jack Murtha. In his first speech on the House floor, Critz promised to bring more jobs to Western Pennsylvania. He also honored Murtha.

"This moment is bittersweet for me because I wouldn't be here right now if Jack Murtha hadn't left us too soon," Critz said. "I've thought about the many lessons that Congressman Murtha taught me. He always said to me: it's always about the work. It is, and I'm going to work tirelessly for the families of Western Pennsylvania."

At Critz's side on Thursday were his 11-year-old twins and his wife. Also in the crowd was Murtha's wife, Joyce, who received a standing ovation from House members. She told WJAC TV News that her late husband would approve of his replacement.

"He trained Mark, so he knows that Mark knows what he's doing and will do a good job representing Western Pennsylvania," Murtha said. "And that's what Jack was all about."

Critz's work in Washington begins immediately. He voted for the first time Thursday. His campaign work continues too. Critz is already campaigning to win the seat again in November.
