International insurance company MetLife Inc. said Thursday it is moving 2,600 jobs from the Northeast and California to expanded offices in North Carolina. A spokesman said that will include positions at the Johnstown location.
Vice President John Calagna from MetLife communications said the Johnstown location is not closing, but would only say some positions are moving and will happen over the next three years.
The company said offices in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island and California, as well as part of the Johnstown location, will be relocated to Charlotte and Raleigh suburb Cary.
Calagna said the company employs about 23,000 U.S. administrative staffers and the consolidation will allow teams to work together in the same location while cutting MetLife's real estate presence.
Calagna couldn’t tell 6 News exactly how many positions will be leaving Cambria County, but said employees currently in positions can apply for them or any other open MetLife positions.
The announcement was seen as a huge benefit for North Carolina, with that state’s governor calling it one of the the largest jobs announcement in recent North Carolina history.
"We're proud that a strong corporate partner like MetLife has decided to invest in North Carolina," said N.C. Governor Pat McCrory. "These jobs will complement our financial services sector in Charlotte and our high-tech hub in Wake County, two distinct sectors we want to expand."
"This administration is committed to working with companies like MetLife to spur job creation and growth," added Sharon Decker, North Carolina Commerce Secretary. "We congratulate MetLife for its success and for investing in North Carolina in this transformational way."
