Mining Changes Coming

PENNSYLVANIA —

In the wake of 16 West Virginia miners killed while working, safety is a major issue.

Miners, politicians and regulators have been heavily focused on technology. The Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration has received more than 50 proposals from manufacturers seeing new applications for their products. Lawmakers also are, pushing bills to require tracking and messaging systems not yet widely used in America. However, industry experts say technology alone won't make miners safer; the industry needs a focus on preventing accidents and equipping miners to survive them.
