MARTINSBURG, Pa. —

An 84-year-old man who was missing in Blair County was found safe on Tuesday by a fellow hunter.

George Hammel Jr., of Hollidaysburg, was reported missing after he became separated by his hunting party on Monday.

Hammel survived the night in sub-freezing temperatures before another hunter spotted him on Tuesday. The other hunter drove Hammel to search crews.

Crews began searching Monday night when Hammel didn’t come home from hunting. Several local fire and police departments and two dog teams combed the area near Walnut Lane off of Clover Creek Road where he was last seen

Martinsburg Police Chief Kerry Hoover said, “We were not sure how this was going to end up, but thanks to all of the volunteers and everybody that was helping out here, we were able to have a happy ending.”

Hammel was taken to Altoona Regional Hospital as a precaution and police said he is expected to be OK.
