Mobile Dental Office Treats Uninsured In Cambria County

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

In light of an earlier report that Pennsylvania is failing when it comes to dental care for children, a local grant will now be able to help provide that care to local kids and their families.

Lee Initiatives gave the Johnstown Free Medical Clinic a $30,000 grant. With dentist Dr. John Ridella lending a hand, the clinic is setting up a new mobile dental unit that will travel all over Cambria County.

"It's basically a dental office you can drive, park and go to work," Ridella said.

The free service will go to people who need it the most, he said.

"We're going to use this to go places where children cannot get to the dentist because of transportation, time constraints and economics," Ridella said.

Officials with the clinic said there are often many places where uninsured people can get medical care, but dental help is often inaccessible.

"We have a tremendous listing of patients who are in need of dental care -- not just preventative care, but some pretty intensive care," said Cathy Kist, of the clinic. "They don't have insurance and they may not have transportation and they lose interest and they lose care until they're in great pain. And then they try and seek immediate care and it's too late and they lose teeth."

The clinic plans to start seeing patients in the mobile dental unit immediately but they will also use it to teach kids about proper dental hygiene and the right way to brush and floss teeth.
