Mobile Home Residents Fight to Save Homes

By STATE COLLEGE, Pa

Stef Davis

Terry Mcgrail has lived in Hilltop Mobile Home Park in State College for 17 years. A single mother, she worked every day to give her son a stable life--a big part of that was owning her own home.

Mcgrail says, “It’s my small version of the American dream. It may be a mobile home, but it’s my home.”

Now Terry and hundreds of others who live here may be forced to pick up and move as soon as February. Mid-west based developer Trinitas wants to buy the park and put up Penn State student housing. They were scheduled to meet with College Township supervisors and the community Thursday, but backed out at the last minute.

Matt Rooke, Hilltop resident, says, “We think this is a really important topic and there are a lot of citizens of College Township that want to discuss this and it’s not in the best interest of the township to delay discussions.”

Attempts to reach both Trinitas and the College Township supervisors were unsuccessful as of news time Tuesday evening. But residents say even though the meeting was cancelled, they will not give up on the fight to keep their park and their homes.

Rook adds, “It’s brought the community together facing this unfortunate situation together.”

Many here say if they are forced to move they will have nowhere to go or wont' be able to afford a move. Others simply say this is the place they've raised their families, built their lives, built a community.

Mcgrail notes ,”It’s their home.”
