More Allegations For Paint Township

Somerset County —

Channel 6 News, under the Freedom of Information Act, has submitted a request to the Paint Township Solicitor to get the last nine months of minutes from Paint Township Supervisors' meetings.

This comes after a Channel 6 News investigation proved township supervisors purchased new police cars without putting out proper bids required by law. The cars were purchased from Gap Chevrolet with a $25,000 state grant that was originally supposed to be used for a K-9 unit car.

According to a source, a township supervisor, who works at the dealership, bought the cars from a salesman who is married to the township secretary.

When we spoke with the Chairman of the Paint Township Supervisors about the lack of bids, he said, "Actually, they were verbal bids. Since they were under $20,000, all we had to do was just call around and get different bids through three different dealers."

When Channel 6 News looked at the State Association of Township Supervisors website, we found the township's actions were illegal. Section 3102 states all contracts or purchases in excess of $10,000 can't be made without putting a notice in at least one township newspaper.

We've also requested the township meeting minutes because a source close to the situation claims they may have been altered. We confronted the chairman on this as well, but he denied the allegation. In fact, he said the supervisors approve them at the beginning of each meeting.
