More charges to be filed against school intruder

By Bill Wadell

ALTOONA, Pa. —

Investigators in Blair County said additional charges will be filed against the man accused of sneaked into a charter school and stealing cash on Wednesday.

Police said a parent called authorities after seeing a man lurking outside the Great Commission School in Altoona.

Before police arrived, 48-year-old Calixto Melendez-Harring Jr. snuck inside the private Christian school as three people left.

Authorities said school workers saw the man roaming the halls on security cameras and activated a lockdown.

Altoona Police Lt. Jeffrey Pratt told 6News that Melendez-Harring did not approach or speak to any students of staff during the incident.

"He has made entry to the building, not for the purpose of molesting or harassing students, but to commit thefts,” said Pratt. “He had entered a secure portion of the building where teachers keep their personal belongings and had stolen some U.S. currency from the teachers' lounge."

Police said the Puerto Rico native has a criminal record in several states and is suspected of at least two local attempted trespassing incidents.

Great Commission School officials told 6News they would not comment about the incident; police said no students or staff were harmed and the school’s reaction to the situation was a “textbook response.”

Officers said additional theft charges will likely be filed next week at a preliminary hearing.
