More People Traveling This Thanksgiving Than Last Year

Wednesday marks one of the busiest travel days of the year as millions of Americans head to a Thanksgiving Day destination.

According to AAA, nearly 40 million Americans are traveling by road this Thanksgiving weekend, which is up 12 percent from last year and amounts to about 94 percent of all holiday travelers this year.

Just more than 1.6 million Americans are expected to fly this Thanksgiving, up 3.5 percent from last year.

In the Alleghenies, traffic on Interstate 80 was steadily increasing throughout Wednesday morning. Though the weather on Wednesday made for a great driving day, Severe Weather Team 6 said that will change quickly Wednesday night through Thursday when a storm could bring a mix of ice and snow.

It would be the first winter storm of the year, and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation crews in the northern Alleghenies said they are spending the day preparing for it by pretreating roads and making sure trucks are ready to hit the highways.

The higher elevations like Rockton Mountain on I-80 in Clearfield County could see the worst weather on Thanksgiving, so PennDOT crews advised drivers to take their time heading to Thanksgiving dinner and back home again.

In Centre County, police warned motorists to anticipate extra traffic throughout the holiday weekend due to a Penn State University football game and holiday shoppers. In addition, hunters are getting ready for Monday's first day of deer season.
