More Woes For Struggling Johnstown Economy

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

About 127 employees of a Johnstown pharmaceutical marketing company, the Peer Group, reported to work Tuesday for the last time. According to officials, they are consolidating work to two other locations, Uniontown and McKeesport.

While Tuesday was the final day of work in Johnstown, officials said most employees were in good spirits. The company has been providing resume help and even brought in companies for interviews. Company officials said many Peer Group employees already have new jobs lined up.

Still, the job loss is another blow for Johnstown, especially since Freightcar America has announced layoffs will begin next week, putting several hundred more local workers out of work.

Peer Group employees had a luncheon for their last day and then were given the rest of the day off with pay. It's not clear at this point what will become of the vacant office space in downtown Johnstown.
