Mother Will Be Tried For Newborn's Death

Johnstown —

Wednesday afternoon Jennifer Strelnik-McKendree walked into a Johnstown courtroom supported by her husband and parents, who discovered her dead baby in the basement of the Moxham-area home.

During the preliminary hearing, several medical and police witnesses were called to testify. One patholigist, called by the prosecution testified that in his opinion, the child's condition did not match up with McKendree's story that the baby fell into the toilet after being born.

The patholigist who performed the autopsy as well as several others testified that the child was found with a piece of plastic covering her mouth. Also, the coroner testified that the child's death was likely the result of smothering and not strangulation.

The judge determined there was enough evidence against the baby's mother to go to trial. The defense claims McKendree is undergoing psychological counseling and that her mental state will likely play a factor at the trial.
