Murder suspect testifies that deadly stabbing was in self defense

By Bill Wadell

BELLEFONTE, Pa. —

The Centre County man on trial for a deadly stabbing earlier this year testified that he defended himself after being attacked.

After the prosecution rested it's case and the defense called several investigators to the stand, 21-year-old Tyler Marlatt testified in his own defense Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities said Marlatt fatally stabbed Tyler Struble during an argument over $20 worth of marijuana outside a house in Lemont in January.

On the stand, Marlatt said Struble approached his girlfriend and he reacted by swinging a wooden stick at him.

Marlatt claims that Struble ran into the house, returned with an aluminum baseball bat and started beating him.

"I feared that I was going to die," said Marlatt. "If I didn't do something, I wasn't going to make it through the night."

Marlatt said that he gabbed a knife from his pocket and started stabbing Struble several times before he fled.

Under oath, Marlatt admitted that he had been under the influence of LSD the morning of the incident.

Closing arguments are expected Wednesday morning before the jury starts deliberating the first degree murder case.
