Nearly $100,000 Of Copper Wire Stolen

Authorities in Blair County are investigating a major copper theft totaling nearly $100,000.

State police said the thieves used bolt cutters to open panel boxes and remove all of the copper wiring in one of the former Sam Rae shops, a business where railroad cars used to be repaired.

The thieves cut the fence surrounding several transformers, removing the safe plates off of those transformers and stealing that copper as well.

Copper theft is nothing new to this area, and police said they have been investigating similar thefts for years.

Police did not say what the thieves' motive may have been, but in the past copper has been sold for drug money.
