Neighbor Helps Woman Escape Johnstown Apartment Fire

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

A neighbor helped save a woman from an early-morning apartment fire in Johnstown on Monday, officials said.

Fire crews said they were called to the 1000 block of Ash Street just before 8 a.m. The building has multiple apartments, so when a first-floor resident heard a smoke detector go off, the person sprung into action and helped a woman who lived in a top-floor apartment get out safely.

The woman who was helped out of her apartment was transported to a hospital, but her condition was not known as of noon. Fire crews believe the flames started in one of the bedrooms in the woman's apartment.

Crews were able to contain the fire and put out the flames quickly, but they were still determining as of noon how much damage the fire caused.
