SOMERSET BOROUGH, Pa. —
A Somerset County couple faces dozens of animal cruelty charges, including accusations they dumped four puppies in the trash. Now, neighbors tell 6 News the couple again has dogs after dozens of animals were recently removed from the property.
Neighbors along Fuller Street in Somerset Borough have been very vocal about Angela Bartels and Jesse Shay from the beginning. Law enforcement agencies said at least five dogs were found dead, and more than 15 animals were seized from the couple since April.
6 News went back to the home Wednesday after neighbors called angry because, they said, the couple had more dogs living inside. There was no answer when 6 News reporter Maria Miller went to the door to see if the couple had anything to say, but at least one dog could be heard barking inside.
Neighbors said they've heard dogs barking and have seen one tied to the porch as recently as Tuesday afternoon. With all the animals that have been removed from the home in the past, neighbors said they feel the couple shouldn't be allowed to have any more animals.
"They do have this dog. It's a black lab," said a neighbor who didn't want to be identified. "They had it pinned up inside on [the] front porch all day yesterday."
"They've already had five dead dogs, they had to kill the cats, and I saw the report of the horse laying on that wagon that they had to destroy," said another neighbor. "I think it's totally wrong. I don't think these people should have an animal, let alone a child."
The Somerset County humane officer told 6 News even though Bartels and Shay are facing animal cruelty charges, there's nothing stopping them from having more animals.
The couple has a preliminary hearing coming up, and that's when it will be up to a judge to decide what happens next.
