Neighbors evacuated after driver hits gas line and utility pole

By Melanie Gillespie

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. —

Several people were evacuated early Sunday morning after a gas line ruptured in Somerset County.

Police said a Berlin man was driving on Berlin Plank Road when he swerved to miss a deer and instead struck a natural gas line and utility pole.

The gas line ruptured and caused gas to escape rapidly, according to police.

Crews evacuated surrounding houses as a precaution.

Columbia Gas capped the well more than two hours later.

Police had that section of Berlin Plank Road for nearly three hours.
