New Flight 93 National Memorial Idea

Somerset County —

A number of ideas for a permanent memorial for the Flight 93 sight were submitted to replace the temporary one and finally an idea was chosen.

When the crescent shape was unveiled in Washington D.C., it received a good reception. Later, some in Congress and others associated the crescent shape with Islam. They use it as a symbol and the hijackers were Islamic.

Now, Murdoch Architects have redesigned the Flight 93 Memorial to a bowl shape to focus on the crash site. It will have a number of trees surrounding it, pathways for visitors, overlooks, and memorabilia in honor of the Flight 93 passengers.

Carol O'Hare's mother was a passenger on Flight 93. O'Hare said, "I was very pleased with the design from the beginning. And, now that the changes have been made I think the design is only made better."

Paul Murdoch is the president of Paul Murdoch Architects. According to Murdoch, "The power of the bowl is kept in place and I think it is more strongly articulated than it was before. That and the experience visitors have are more enriched."

The permanent Flight 93 National Memorial is expected to be developed at the site by the 10th anniversary in 2011.
